There are two replicas of this composition with a slightly different title: View of St. Peter-and-Paul Fortress and Palace Embankment. One of them, identical to the tost one, executed in the same year and signed by the painter, was received from the collection of Yusupov's family and is now kept in the Arkhangelskoye Palace Museum which also possesses a pencil sketch of the composition (to be found in the 1827 Album of manuscripts of the Arkhangelskoye Gallery). The SRM houses the 1799 variant-replica of the picture (oil on canvas. 71.5 x 109; Inv. No Ж-5048, received in 1906 from S. Yatsenko). Provenance: Received in 1930 from the State Hermitage, Leningrad Reproductions: the replica from the Arkhangelskoye Mansion Museum was published in A. In 1831, P. Basin was made Academician for the picture Socrates Defending Alcibiades during the Battle of Potideya (1828). Known are two sketches of the same title: the Kirov Regional Art Museum named after A. M. Gorky possesses the oil sketch, while the STG houses the graphic one. The SRM has a few preparatory drawings for the picture (p-11311, p-11315, p-11318) as well as a print of the contour engraving executed by K. Afanasyev after the present painting (Inv. No Гр. 34594). The half-length portrait of Grand Princess, who is given a three-quarter turn to the left. Her arms are lowered, the fair hair divided by straight parting are curled, her head is crowned with a wreath of pink roses. She has long ear-rings with blue stones in her ears. Her costume consists of a white dress with pink bolero and a light white scarf around her neck and breast. Fastened on the bolero is the star of the Order of St. Catherine. She is also wearing the miniature portrait of Empress Catherine the Great. The right-hand background is painted with tree foliage. At the left is a patch of light-coloured sky. The half-length portrait of a young hunter. The model is given a three-quarter turn, his shoulders turned to the left, the face is slightly turned to the right. In front of himself with both hands he is holding a fowling-piece. The hunter is dressed in a light-grey armyak (peasant's coat). Showing from under the coat is a white shirt decorated with a design embroidered in red at the neckline. He has a green cap with grey flaps upon his dark bobbed hair. The half-length portrait of a peasant girl, represented en face. Her light-brown hair is divided by straight parting, her head is winded round with a white shawl in blue stripes. She is wearing a white blouse, with broad sleeves, and a light-coloured patterned sarafan (peasant dress), with narrow shoulder-straps. The girl's bare neck is decorated with a string of red beads. She is wearing a dress of golden brocade, trimmed at the neckline with lace; thrown over her right shoulder is a red cloak with blue lining, her powdered hair is decorated with a spray of flowers set with precious stones.
